Sodium Picosulfate helps to relieve constipation.
Sodium Picosulfate belongs to a group of medicines called stimulant laxatives. Stimulant laxatives increase bowel movement by stimulating the muscles of the bowel.
Sodium Picosulfate is also used for bowel cleansing before bowel examinations or surgery.
Take Sodium Picosulfate exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
If you have been given tablet or capsule, swallow it whole with a glass of water.
If you have been given oral liquid, shake it well before use. Use the measuring spoon to measure out your prescribed dose.
You may take Sodium Picosulfate with or without food.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Alert your doctor if you have the following:
- severe dehydration (excessive water loss from the body)
- paralytic ileus (a condition where the bowel does not work properly)
- intestinal obstruction (blocked bowel)
- serious abdominal conditions such as appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix)
- inflammation of the bowel
- abdominal pain with nausea or vomiting
as Sodium Picosulfate may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have an addiction to alcohol, liver disease or epilepsy (fits) as the liquid formulation may contain alcohol.
Unless instructed by your doctor, Sodium Picosulfate should not be taken for a long period of time. Prolonged use can lead to excessive loss of water and cause an imbalance of salts in your body.
Sodium Picosulfate should not be given to children less than 10 years of age unless recommended by the doctor.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, especially if you are taking the liquid formulation.
The common side effects of Sodium Picosulfate include any of the following: abdominal discomfort, cramps or pain and diarrhoea.
Notify your doctor if prolonged constipation occurs while you are on Sodium Picosulfate.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- steroid medicines e.g. prednisolone
- antibiotics
- diuretics (water pills) e.g. hydrochlorothiazide, furosemide
- cardiac glycosides (heart medicines) e.g. digoxin
This list does not include all medicines that interact with Sodium Picosulfate.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicine, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
